New Beginnings

Woodlands staff and residents embraced New Beginnings during the afternoon and reflected upon the events of the last year. Staff all wore yellow to reflect the yellow of our sunflower ethos approach to care.  From moving speeches from both Jo our Director of Care and the Manager Deb. and Deputy Jay Jay, to receiving a yellow rose of remembrance and releasing balloons the afternoon was one of love, care, respect and dignity for our whole Woodlands family. Residents enjoyed children in song and poetry as well as singing themselves and then went out into our lovely garden to see the release of the balloons and the planting of a beautiful cherry tree.

On Saturday 3rd. April it was a very special day indeed for the home as our lovely Kath T. reached her 100th. milestone!

The day started with Kath having her hair done, followed by a lovely piano sing-a-long with Louis. Then just before lunch Kath was presented with a giant Birthday card signed by all the staff and lots of the residents, as well as Alison the owner and Jo our Director of Care. Kath was also given the gift of a framed print of her on her wedding day, enhanced and enlarged from a print given to us by her daughter Sue. Kath had told us her wish was to be able to ‘see’ her husband Douglas again and this in part was the best way we could fulfil this on her special day. She was it was fair to say emotional when she saw the picture in fact we all were as we all sang and wished Kath a very Happy 100th. Birthday.

Everyone enjoyed a high tea style lunch with delicious sandwiches, savouries and cakes in honour of Kath’s Birthday and then Kath enjoyed a special visit with her daughter and then her whole family  safely via the window.

Whilst that was happening residents enjoyed the giant crossword puzzle and upon Kath’s return she was presented with the fabulous 100th. Birthday cake Sue had so beautifully made, and residents sang again ‘Happy Birthday’ and ‘For She’s A jolly Good fellow!’ Everyone raised a glass of bubbles in honour of Kath, and enjoyed a slice of the wonderful cake if they wanted. Then residents learnt a little more of Kath’s life as she enjoyed her very own ‘This Is Your Life’ reminiscence activity with music and pictures. Everything from the Charleston (music popular in the ‘Roaring Twenties’ when Kath was born!)  to ‘We’ll meet Again, an anthem for all the women like Kath whose sweet hearts were away fighting the War as she worked as an engineer for Blackmans in Tottenham.

Kath was tired by the end of all this but was very happy and thanked the staff for making her feel so very special on this her very special Birthday!!
