September’s Activities at Woodlands Ranch
September was yet again a very busy month for Residents, with the theme “Garden party and back to school”. Residents have been busy reminiscing about old school days, with many funny and interesting stories about what they used to get up to and how different school lessons were back in ‘their day’. Residents have also visited Southsea for their annual seaside trip and been busy making sweets in preparation for our annual garden party that was held at Woodlands this year to celebrate their 40th Anniversary. Here are just some of the things our Residents have been up to:
On Wednesday 7th September a large number of residents from Woodlands enjoyed a wonderful sunny trip out to the Seaside in Southsea, which as always is one of the Residents favourite trips. Leaving just after 10.30am Residents arrived at their favourite seaside restaurant Rocksbys just before lunch, and again we were very lucky to have clear blue skies and plenty of sunshine. Residents all sat down for a fabulous lunch of traditional fish, chips and mushy peas, washed down with a nice glass of wine. Then it was time for ice-creams all round whilst enjoying the fabulous sea views of Southsea. Shortly after it was time for a walk along the promenade to take in the sea air, or chance to sit in the beautiful sunshine and watch all the boats going by. All our Residents had a really great day out, with much chatter on the trip home about how much they had enjoyed it.
Our monthly Singing for Brain session was held at Hill House on Wednesday 14th September with the wonderful Barbara Raynor. Residents from all three homes joined together for an afternoon of stimulating and uplifting musical social activity, which is designed to enhance the wellbeing of residents, especially those with dementia. New songs are learned by ear, aiding concentration and giving a sense of accomplishment, while familiar tunes rekindle memories. The afternoon was finished off perfectly with tea and cake.
Residents from Woodlands and Hillbrow joined together for a trip into Fleet on Friday 16th September. It was a lovely morning out for a spot of shopping in the Hart Shopping Centre and then stopping for a drink at their favourite café ‘More than Coffee’.
It was all things ‘Wild West’ on Saturday 17th September as Woodlands hosted the annual garden party to raise funds for our charity “Families supporting care”. It was especially significant this year as Woodlands celebrated their 40th Anniversary of the home being opened. Residents and staff along with many of their families and friends enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of great entertainment, with lots of different stalls including the very popular Teddy Tombola. Another very popular stall this year was the western style stocks where staff and visitors got their chance to throw sponges and buckets of cold water at some very brave senior management. ‘Cowboy hats’ off to all those that showed such great team spirit in getting soaked in the stocks and raising lots of money, it was indeed a very popular stall, I cannot imagine why!! It was a great afternoon which raised just under £3000 pounds for such a worthy charity, we would like to thank everyone that attended and showed their continued support. We would also like to say a big thank you to all those that helped out on the day and to all those that donated raffle prizes and cakes, your support is greatly appreciated.
On Friday 23rd September Residents from all 3 homes took a trip out to their favourite local pub The Tweseldown. It was a lovely morning out and a chance for Residents to relax, have a chat and enjoy a drink before returning home in time for lunch.
On the morning of Friday 30th September Residents from Woodlands and Hill House enjoyed a trip out to Redfield’s garden centre. Residents had a leisurely stroll around looking at all the flower bulbs in preparation for planting out for the spring, before enjoying a well-earned cup of tea and biscuits in the restaurant.
