Woodlands Activities for August
August was yet again a very busy month for activities and outings.
The theme for this month was “around the world” so Residents have been reminiscing and talking about all the different countries they have visited, lived in or would like to visit. Also throughout the month Residents have had the chance to learn about 4 countries in particular, these were South Africa, Spain, Italy and Australia. Each of these countries were celebrated for the week and Residents participated in activities, quizzes and music relating to each country which was rounded off at the end of each week by sampling some authentic food.
These are just some of the things our Residents and been up to:
On Wednesday 5th August Residents attended Hill House to participate in a Singing for the Brain Session with Barbara Raynor. This is always a popular activity as our Residents really enjoy getting involved and singing along to songs. These sessions are very interactive and help to invoke memories, boost confidence and self-esteem as well as giving a feeling of self-worth and wellbeing.
Friday 7th August saw the end of South Africa week, Residents had a themed lunch menu which gave them the chance to try some authentic South African food. The menu consisted of Chicken a la King served on a bed of Rice with a side of South African salad followed by traditional South African milk tart, this of course was washed down with a nice glass of South African wine.
After lunch Residents enjoyed a trip up to Hill House for a South African afternoon party which began by being greeted in Afrikaans by Louis. Residents then enjoyed lively demonstrations of the traditional and famous “Gum Boot” dance as well as the “Pata Pata” dance. They also enjoyed singing along to a beautiful lullaby “Tula Tula. It was a wonderful afternoon of South African culture, dance and music rounded up nicely with a well-earned cup of tea and traditional “koeksisters”.
On Friday 21st August Italy was the flavour of the day, Residents enjoyed a lunch menu of Spaghetti Bolognese served with garlic bread followed by Tiramisu accompanied by a nice glass of Italian wine.
Later that afternoon Residents enjoyed an Italian themed party where we talked about some of Italy’s most famous landmarks. Residents also enjoyed demonstrations of a number of traditional Italian dances including “Tarantella Napolitana”, followed by a sing along to some more well-known Italian music by Pavarotti and Dean Martin amongst others. A wonderful Italian afternoon with lots of singing and dancing was enjoyed by all topped off with a nice glass of Italian wine.
The sun was shining on Friday 28th August for Residents to enjoy their Australian themed BBQ. The menu consisted of Patties and Snags (Burgers and Sausages) cooked on our very own Barbie in the garden followed by Lamington’s cake (national cake of Australia), washed down with a refreshing glass of Australian lager and wine.
In the afternoon Residents enjoyed a great Australian party at Hill House with staff dressed up Australian style, and entertainment provided by the lively “Jonti Duo”. There was plenty of dancing and lots of singing especially to “Waltzing Matilda” which seemed to be one of the Residents particular favourites, it was a wonderful afternoon and a great end to our around the world theme.
